Hi Mark,

I've not tried receiving VLF signals from meteors, but there are some 
references on the web including this one from Nasa which is interesting:

It seems to imply that not much in the way of an antenna is needed. I 
suspect a long wire would be sufficient. Wolf DL4YHF has also done some 
work receiving VLF and has links to many interesting articles about it, 
though currently his website appears to be down. http://www.vlf.it/ is 
another good place to look for tips.
