I agree with the other replies that you probably witnessed the Giacobinid
storm of October 9/10, 1946. This event was best seen from the Western
Hemisphere with peak rates ranging from 3,000-10,000 meteors per hour. These
are remarkable rates as this event occurred with a full moon in the sky! Of
course with all the meteor activity it is understandable if you do not
recall seeing the moon at all.
