(meteorobs) Radio Listening..

Thanks Andy that is interesting

I once 'heard' a Perseid, sounded like a fast hiss, at the time, I
thought I had imagined it, but others have clearly heard them too., the
VLF component would explain it, as they point out any natural transducer
would resonate at VLF, and I was very near a pine forest at the time,
and they actually mention pine needles as a possible candidate for
producing the sound(!). Might be interesting to transmit some VLF into
quiet woodland
and listen for the resultant audio, It's amazing playing with a VLF
receiver everything seems to emit a small amount of VLF even dripping
water!

I shall certainly give the VLF a try when the Perseids peak and report
back if I get anywhere.

Best
Mark

Hi Mark,

I've not tried receiving VLF signals from meteors, but there are some
references on the web including this one from Nasa which is interesting:
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast26nov_1.htm
It seems to imply that not much in the way of an antenna is needed. I
suspect a long wire would be sufficient. Wolf DL4YHF has also done some
work receiving VLF and has links to many interesting articles about it,
though currently his website appears to be down. http://www.vlf.it/ is
another good place to look for tips.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!
