Lew,

Won't the moon be a fairly small crescent though and shouldn't be that
big of a spoiler.

Hey, Mike, you don't even mention the most accessible major
shower of the year for Northerners - the Perseids! And this
is a GREAT YEAR to see them... The peak night is Wednesday
night/Thursday morning, 11/12 August. But the night before
(Tuesday, 10/11 August), and especially the night after the
peak (Thursday 12/13 August), should both be grand as well!

Remember that you only need to wait until its good and dark,
and the Perseid's radiant point is high enough in the sky,
before you can start to see Perseids: 9:30 - 10pm is a good
time to start, for people around 40-50 N latitude. And of
course, the later the night gets, the higher that radiant
gets, and the more meteors you are likely to see. :)

Just keep in mind: That old nasty moon will be rising up to
spoil your fun around 1am the morning of the 10/11, then by
2am the morning of 11/12, and 3am the morning of 12/13 Aug.
(Again, times are specific to our location in New England...
Observers further South and West may enjoy later moonrises.)

And this one is out of date, but still has some good details:

I am hoping to catch the Perseids from the Florida Keys for
the whole of next week. But where ever *you* may end up in
this coming week, I wish you CLEAR SKIES FOR THE PERSEIDS!
