I was fortunate to again find crystal clear skies at my site this
morning and had a great three-hour session. The Geminids flew fast and
furious, especially during the third hour (2:00-3:00 AM local) when 102
Geminds were logged! This is the first time I've ever logged more than 100
non-Leonid shower members in a single hour and could well be my best
non-Leonid hour ever. The first two periods saw 86 and 91 GEMs,
respectively. In all I logged 308 meteors in exactly 3.00 hrs teff.
I was pleased to once more have several negative magnitude Geminids,
including a -4. I noticed while writing up my report I was biased against
+4 magnitude meteors -- there's a substantial gap between the +3 and +5
column.
I plan one more trip out to my site again tonight, from 9:00 - 12:00 local
time, maybe as late as 1:00. It has been unbelievably clear here for the
Geminids and I'd be willing to bet it will be many, many more years before I
get as good a seat as I've gotten this time around.... (Note: 5-minute bins
at very end of report)
