I have never seen the zigzag phenomena but do vividly recall a splitting meteor
in the early 1970's On a canal near Rupert Idaho at dusk a bright slow
meteor in the southern sky heading SE towards the SE horizon split in two and
following laws of conservation of momentum the brighter/larger? piece stayed
fairly straight and the dimmer/smaller? piece was blown off with some side
momentum giving it a slight change in direction to the ESE. Ended up looking
kind of like a lopsided "Y" in the sky.
Very Cool. Bruce Norton are you out there? (He saw it too.)
It may have been satellite re-entry material?
