I have never seen the zigzag phenomena  but do vividly recall a splitting meteor
in the early 1970's    On a canal near Rupert Idaho at dusk a bright slow
meteor in the southern sky heading SE towards the SE horizon  split in two  and
following laws of conservation of momentum the brighter/larger? piece stayed
fairly straight and the dimmer/smaller? piece was blown off with some side
momentum giving it a slight change in direction to the ESE.   Ended up looking
kind of like a lopsided "Y" in the sky.

Very Cool.    Bruce Norton are you out there?  (He saw it too.)

It may have been satellite re-entry material?
