Hello Christine and list,

Drying the meteorites out in an oven would not be suggested by me. Water bearing salt crystals has been found in at least two meteorites. Zag and Monohans

My Monohans collection page, with the only Monohans thin section in private collection?

Well....what they call free water in the meteorites is really water vapor in the salt crystals, but, several other meteorite finds that have had excessive weathering in many pieces. Which makes us think they might have been water bearing meteorites. (Example: SaU 001).

Putting the meteorite in a Ziplock bag and in the freezer would be the best thing to do, the most important to consider, that is if you happen to have a newly fallen meteorite in your hand, is letting the meteorite be studied as soon as possible. Radiation works in half lives, and some are very short.
