Speculation aired over meteor crash site Australian
Broadcasting Corporation May 4, 2004

Scientists say a meteor that was seen in the Perth sky
at the weekend probably landed about 100 kilometres
west of Geraldton, in Western Australia's mid-west.

Perth Observatory astronomer Peter Birch says among
the dozens of callers who reported seeing the meteor,
a call from Chapman Valley was the most valuable.

He says that call confirmed that the meteor landed
somewhere to the west of Geraldton.

"It's very hard to tell how far things are away at
night-time, you know bright lights, it's just hard to
say and this is extremely brilliant, but it has
crashed into the ocean somewhere to the west of
Geraldton, the fact that nobody heard any noise, this
was at least 100km away," he said.
