(meteorobs) more about the 1001 trail (Leonid meteor shower)

Being a complete novice as far a trail estimation is concerned, can someone
briefly
please explain how the shapes and locations of these ancient trails are
determined
with such accuracy, especially as there will be precious little reports on
past
encounters, let alone observational techniques. Back-dating orbit parameters
hundreds
of years must also become quite inaccurate quite quickly?
