After many months, I was finally afforded to opportunity to observe
last night. Skies were forecast as partly cloudy but I went out anyway
...the single lone cloud at my site drifted through just as I began the
session, from there on out it was clear though not terribly transparent.
The first period was relatively busy with 13 meteors seen including
a single ATR. Two more ATR's would be observed during the second
period, which had 11 meteors total. All three ATR candidates aligned
perfectly with the suspected radiant. Only one, at +2, was fairly bright.
I was a bit distarcted by mosquitoes and a roving oppossum during the
second period...I had left my repellent at home!! Much to my chagrin,
I also found myself without usable plots when I arrived on sight....I was
forced to use my star atlas to find radiants (fortunately I had brought
along Bob's weekly outlook!!) After several months of gathering dust,
my meteor kit was not well-stocked -- with plots, bug repellant *or* snacks!
In 1999, I had good ATR rates the night of Sept 13 (sol Long 170.110)
so tonight may be crucial in detecting a 2004 return...as I can't count on
the weather here, here's hoping others can get out tomorrow morning and
observe.
