Does anyone have a comment about the contrail that
was mentioned on the list yesterday
(near Edwards AFB)?

Yes Peter,

Here is an example of some of the comments:

I stand corrected on the bolide trail.
I guess I never saw one in the low atmosphere.

coupled with a trail that is a dead-ringer for a

more likely cause. Compare Jim's images with some of
those taken of Tagish Lake:

Hi All,

Actually, it looks promising to me. The short smoke
trail and itsrandom curling are just what you'd expect
from a bolide. An aircraft contrail should have been
much longer -- or if this short, it should
have been more linear. --Rob

The meteor trails I've seen tend to be quite straight
or at least an arc. This looks more like a contrail to
me. Military planes don't always fly in a straight
line for a whole slew of reasons, so I would be more
inclined to say this is a military contrail. The only
problem is there tends to be no training on the
weekends. It would really help to know the lon/lat of
where the photograph was taken. We can assume the
direction is west.

BTW, nice photography. Most of the time those rays of
light you see in real life just barely show in the
photographs. Cranking up the saturation helps.
