>>>It's a great idea to create the online meteor observing base. I
Gac> appreciate it very much. I think, it could be developed to broad bank
Gac> of archive data useful for various studies.
Gac> I tried to do something with the page you linked, but could create no
Gac> login. I constantly have the message "The password you entered does
Gac> not match". Perhaps, it's one of bugs you mentioned.
Gac> Nevertheless, I have some considerations on this base.
Gac> First of all, the process of entering data should be easy. I think,
Gac> these is no necessity to restrict to AMS format. For example, I use
Gac> IMO format as the base of my reports. So I'd have to double my reports
Gac> in both formats. Probably, format of reports should be free, as on
Gac> Meteorobs. I have a version, how it could be done. (I didn't see the
Gac> form, reasons are above, so I don't know how close to my proposals it
Gac> is). The form should have several text fields, containing main
Gac> attributes of report - such as "Name", "Year", "Month", "Day",
Gac> "Begin/End Time". They would be used in the search. I think, ideally
Gac> the base should be able to give out observations during some time
Gac> intervals searcher is interested in. To search for the results of
Gac> individual observers (number of observing hours, meteors seen, etc.)
Gac> some attribute fields could be created, although, IMHO, this personal
Gac> information is less important, than overall data. And the second part
Gac> of the form - a large text field, in which reports could be copied or
Gac> written as they are compiled by observers. It would be nice to see not
Gac> only current reports, but also from previous years and, considering
Gac> large amounts of such reports, they should be entered quickly and
Gac> easily.

Gac> Best regards, Mikhail Maslov<<

Gac> I'm probably missing it somewhere, but I don't see what you're trying to do
Gac> that IMO hasn't already done. I haven't looked at any of IMO's archived books
Gac> or perhaps discs now in several years, but I bet they are still listing all
Gac> the info that's being mentioned by individuals. I get the impression that you
Gac> are trying to re-invent the wheel.
Gac> GeoZay

Vehicles usually need more than a single wheel for normal movement.
I know about IMO archives. They are available on IMO site, and the
latest file is for year 2001. I understand the difficulties of
entering data into IMO base, especially large amounts of observations
of recent Leonid storms. So IMO files are perhaps the "final edition"
of what observers of the world have seen in the previous years. Al's base
would be more operational. So let's see to what results it will come and
how much observers will get interested in it.

Best regards, Mikhail
