Skies were partly cloudy during the day with altocumulus. Conditions
improved near dusk as the mid-level clouds drifted out to sea. I was
casually watching the southern skies around 2100 local time when a long
Perseid earthgrazer appeared over the house. It lasted three seconds (from
what I saw) and disappeared low in the southern sky. It was a deep orange
color and a great way to start the night. Stratus soon rolled in ending any
further observations from home. The skies at the Japatul helipad were
cloudless when Pete Gural and I arrived. We again set up four intensified
video units and began counting at 2330 PDT (0630 UT). Rates were fairly
steady throughout the morning with the best activity occurring during the
next to last hour. Clouds did appear in the south during the middle of the
watch and by 0400 PDT (1100 UT) they were obscuring the eastern sky. I
turned westward for the last 30 minutes to avoid the clouds. The Perseids
were once again very bright which made up for the average rates.
