11 km/s

For how long can they be illuminated?

up to over 1 minute in rare occasions (large earthgrazers). More typical: 1 to
several seconds. 10 seconds is not too long for a true meteor, but rather short
for a re-entry of rocket material. A re-entry typically takes tens of seconds
to minutes and the object in question has a very slow angular movement. It takes
minutes to traverse te sky.
