I had the good fortune of obtaining clear skies this morning, just in
time for
moonset at 3:15AM local time. Transparency was excellent despite the few
small wisps of clouds that were present on the eastern horizon. Upon
setting
up I almost immediately began seeing Geminids -- a "cluster" of four at
8:04-05 to start a rather busy two-hour meteor session. They lumped
together
again at 09:09-14 and at 09:33. All told , the GEMs were on an even footing
with the SPOs, with 22 seen of each -- 53 meteors were observed
during the watch.
The Monocerotids were quiet with only one member seen, and the Sigma
Hydrids were not as active as I have seen them before in the past, with 4
observed
over two hours. As with last weekend, I again noticed swift meteors
originating from the UMA/LMI region -- five in all aligning well with
central UMA.
I note these with asterisks (*) below.
While driving to my site, around 7:53 UT I spotted a -5 or -6 bright
light
traveling S to N, to my left, almost parallel to, and about 25 degrees
above,
the horizon. It moved slowly (for a meteor) and had absolutely no tail,
train
or wake (visible from the car). I saw it for maybe two seconds before it
passed
behind trees. It should have reappeared in front of me but I never saw it
again.
