Thanks, David.  I took a look at some (couldn't find some of the stuff you pointed us to) of the pictures and I agree that the official photo is either a composite or has even  been re-touched.  Why don't they just tell us that at the outset?  It would sure stop a lot of nonsense and speculation.  In fact, the real "starting" photo--the one that captures the meteor as it initially strikes the atmosphere--looks quite a bit different than the "official" photo that was published.  For instance it doesn't have quite the immediate bright meteor appearance that I mentioned before, and the trail appears to enlarge as we expect rather than be one same-sized trail.  
Or maybe it's just difficult to interpret a small streak from millions of miles away...
