Once you find a quiet channel (preferably at the lower end of the FM 
spectrum), why not just go here:

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/fmq.html

You have several parameters by which to search, of course you'll only need 
to search on those channels you have previously identified as usuable.  I 
have used the FCC site dozens of time to identify (not FM but television) 
tropshepheric and Es skip long-distance "enhancements" while amatuer DXing. 
It's indespensible...to me, anyway.
