No one seems to have posted anything about the Orionids the past two mornings.
A summary of my observations: (4 miles NE of Ames, Story Co, Iowa, USA)
21 October 2005 (average limiting mag. ~4.5; waning gibbous Moon)
07:00-08:00 UT 3 ORI; 1 SPOR
08:00-09:00 UT 10 ORI; 3 SPOR
09:00-10:00 UT 9 ORI; 3 SPOR
10:00-11:00 UT 11 ORI; 6 SPOR
22 October 2005 (average lim. mag. ~4.5 08:00-09:00; ~4.7 (09:15- 11:15)
08:00-09:00 UT 7 ORI; 1 SPOR 09:00-09:15 Break: band of clouds moving thru.
09:15-10:15 UT 11 ORI; 2 SPOR
10:15-11:15 UT 5 ORI; 4 SPOR
The morning of 21 Oct no Orionids brighter than mag. -2.
The morning of 22 Oct during the last hour two Orionids mag. -5 with trains
lasting 6 and 5 seconds in the bright Moon light.
I used a black umbrella to block the bright Moon light both mornings. It is
extremely helpful!! (The Moon light glares very badly on my glasses. I
normally wear trifocals, but I have a pair of "astro" glasses with my distance
correction and very large lenses which I use for meteor observing.)
Perhaps because of the bad limiting magnitudes the data isn't very useful, but I
thought it was well worth going out.
