When I reached my site the ecliptic (and the Taurid radiants)
were quite high in the south and I had good expectations
for the Taurids -- I was not disappointed. During the first
hour, the combined Taurid rates were just one member shy of
doubling the sporadic rates -- an 11:6 ratio! As previously
stated, I did see a few bright members, and the STAs
overwhelmed the NTAs in number, 14:2. I saw a total of 42
meteors including 8 Orionids in 2.05 hours Teff.
I planned for three hours but had a very frustrating series of
mechanical breakdowns. First the backlight on
my alarm clock ceased functioning, then my tape recorder
conked out. An eight minute break spent shuffling batteries
did not help -- my recorder was shot. The upside is that clear weather is
called for again tonight and maybe with some new equipment
I can get three solid hours in!
