Dave, others:

A couple years ago Sky & Telescope mentioned a great "unipod",
a collapsible and adjustable 3-6 foot handle available from paint
stores with a maybe 3X6 inch platform, attached to the handle by
a ball-bearing-like universal joint. This is used to sand ceilings or
drywall. Just adjust the handle to your height, either sitting or
standing, place the binocs on the platform and hold them steady.

The handle also serves as a walking stick wich trudging in the
dark to those black sky sites, off the road.

<< James Muirden in "The Amateur Astronomer's Handbook" suggested to use
a broom handle to steady binouclars. I followed his advice, except it's a
pine branch about 24 inches long and it reduces jiggle about 70%. It can
also be placed on my legs when I'm sitting while looking at terrestrial
objects, very steady and I then can have two hands on the binoculars.
