During our second day in the Mojave Desert, Robin Gray and I spent several
hours viewing objects through my telescope during the daylight hours. Near
noon we viewed Mercury, Venus (very close to the sun!), Jupiter, Dubhe
(Alpha Ursae Majoris), and Arcturus. Approximately one hour before sunset we
viewed Mercury, Jupiter, Arcturus, Antares, Vega, Deneb, Altair, Graffias
(Beta Scorpii), Izar (Epsilon Bootis), Ras Algethi (Alpha Herculis), and
Albireo (Beta Cygni). It was interesting to view double stars in daylight.
Once the sun set we spent way too long viewing deep sky objects plus
comet Swan.
Once again we only obtained about three hours sleep during the evening hours
and both of us pooped out after about four hours of observing. It's a real
shame as the Orionid activity was incredible, even surpassing the strong
rates seen back in 1974. I still managed to count 205 Orionids during 5.00
of effective observing time. There were many simulteasous Orionids plus
numerous bright fireballs. The brightest being a -8. The brightest fireballs
left persistent trains lasting a full minute and more. Nearly every one of
the negative magnitude Orionids possessed a persistent train. My highest
Orionid count occured between 3 and 4am when 58 were seen. Those rates are
even good for the Perseids and Geminids! If I saw 268 meteors I am confident
the video camera picked up nearly 500! The only colors noticed in brighter
meteors were yellow and orange.
We picked a great shower for a desert expedition and the weather cooperated
nicely. Not a cloud was to be seen the entire night. It's was just a darn
shame there were not more hours in the day so we could observe plus get a
full nights sleep.
