You have a good point on that, Arlene. A  Naval Commander is able to identify 
everything he sees, which is essential to  navigation. For him to be unable 
to identify (or at least, not openly identify)  this object, is something to 
wonder. 
Overall, the description does sound like an amazing  fireball. My opinion, I 
don't think it was ball lightning, or anything like  that. It seems to have 
taken a very specific path across the sky, with meteor  characteristics. I guess 
we'll never know.  :)
