Hello,
Went out for a dark-sky country morning observation/ill-fated imaging
of comet McNaught 2006 P1this morning (30th local time, 29th UT).
During preparation in suburbs for drive, and after arriving at a round
3:15 am local time (17:15 29th jan UT), and then for about an hour
only, we noticed an unusual amount of bright meteors, and not as bright
ones, seemingly coming from a common similar part of the sky,
seemingly, to the casual eye, emanating from Centaurus, particularly
Alpha and/or Beta? possibly. A couple of them were the fastest large
bright meteors we have ever seen, and seemed queer, as our brains and
eyes past experience found it hard to match their speed to their
appearance! Highly irregular! We mostly accidentally and casually
noticed at least 9 or 10 in a hour from this vague area, and sometimes
when a series or pairs, or bright ones caught our attention we watched
longer, while setting up a guiding scope and cameras ect. we definitely
had the strong impression we were witnessing a shower!
Just in case it matters!, but it was a nice consolation to our
weather-thwarted imaging attempts! btw over head was generally much
clearer than the horizons, so we must of missed quite a few?
Cheers
