(meteorobs) Purpose of observing meteors

Hi,

Maybe I should have asked this question before I set up all the
equipment to observe meteors. Anyway, I don't think it is too late :)

So what is the scientific application of observing meteors? Is it
something I can pursue myself or do I need to necessarily pool my data
collection with others for any meaningful application?
