Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - May 2007

May 2007 could not compete with the record-breaking month before. In a sense,
reality came back to the camera network with "only" well above 750 observing
hours and almost 2000 meteors. There were just two observers who managed to
observe in 20 or more nights, and after 512 observing nights in a row,
May 28/29 was the first night where we could not observe any meteor at all.
Reasons for this were the weather on the one hand (the satellite picture
http://www.metrec.org/reports/20070501.jpg shows that all of central Europe
was covered by a thick cloud blanket), and a number of inactive cameras on the
other hand. Two of the most active cameras (SRAKA by Mihaela Triglav and
REZIKA by Javor Kac) had to pause because of configuration problems and
observing site reconstuction, respectively, and for Ilkka Yrjola the "summer
break" started due to the high solar altitude.
On the other hand, Mirko Nitschke finished the maintenance of AKM2 such that
Wolfgang Hinz could resume the observation. AKM2 now employes a new video
camera with a better projection lens, which significantly improved the image
quality (as to be seen in two images from March 18 and May 20 at
http://www.metrec.org/reports/20070502.gif).
In the last few weeks I found the time to work intensively on the meteor
detection software again. One weakness of MetRec was, that there was no easy
way to recognize possible activity of minor showers. If at all, these were only
detected during data analysis many month later, or when other observers pointed
us to unusual activity (which has happened several times in the past).
For this reason, I implemented a simple function, that computes and displays
backward tracings during (MetRec) and after (PostProc) the observation. Now
an observer finds out easily, if there is an active meteor shower (many
backward tracings intersect at one point). The example shown at
http://www.metrec.org/reports/20070503.gif comes from MINTRON1 on May 6/7,
when beside a number of sporadic meteors also a few shower members
(eta-Aquariids) could be observed in the morning hours.
After further testing, this functionality will be made available to all
observers with the next MetRec release.
