Several Tulsa Astronomy Club members went to Chaco Canyon for the Space
probe impact of a comet. They said the skies were amazing, darker than
any place in the United States they had been to including Texas Star
Party. They are also astronomy driven because of the Indian
Petroglips(sp)and many structures that were built that show celestial
events. Anyway if you go to there website which I think is
www.chacocanyon.com you can find more information. Great place for
hiking through the Indian ruins during the day also. No towns close by,
so no glow of lights from anywhere in a 360 degree view.

>>My first thought was one
of our National Parks . . . but which one? If anybody has any
experience
with the State and National Parks out west -- especially in regard to
stargazing -- and can make some suggestions, I'd sure like to hear
them.<<
Joe, you might want to consider on top of sentinel dome in Yosemite
National
Park. From the parking lot to the top of the dome, there is a
relatively
easy 1 mile hike. Once on top, you have an unobstructed 360 degree view
with
very dark skies.
