Joe,

I'm surprised no one else brought up the climate issue.

I feel your best bet is northern California and or southern Oregon. There is 
lots to see for the entire family plus the weather is usually clear and not 
as hot as the desert southwest. As Robin Gray mentioned, there are also some 
very dark spots available in this area. It's also a good compromise between 
radiant altitude and length of night.

If your Perseid plans get clouded out, stick around until the end of the 
month and you can enjoy a total eclipse of the moon plus a possible outburst 
from the Alpha Aurigids.
