The general theory is any meteor/fireball with a visual magnitude
greater than mag. -6 creates a audible sound that is described as
electrophonic. The theory states the ablation of the meteor/fireball
generates electromagnetic energy that is propagated outward. If
conditions are "right" a person will "hear" a noise as the
electromagnetic energy is converted to sound near the observer.

If you google electrophonic meteor you will have 789 hits for an
explanation or electrophonic fireball yields 663 hits for an
explanation.
