Thanks for the helpful ideas from earlier posts.

I will make the trips to the libraries.  Sidgwick is at the Library of 
Congress and perhaps the US Naval Observatory library has a copy of Opik's 
work from the U of Tartu.

I hope that other interested informants will not be deterred by these 
suggestions and will also contribute other insights that they may have.
