Addendum. Since messages are slow.....

Reflecting signals also have a critical angle where the RF wave is sent out 
of the atmosphere entirely instead of reflecting too. Radio wave info can be 
found at amateur URL's. ARRL has a very nice book on radio wave propogation 
and the elements of that science.
