The latter I think.

The trail of trailets is at about -6 degrees declination (and paralel to the 
equator) in the photographs. That is exactly the geostationary belt. In this 
time of the year they can flare bright.

(with thanks to Peter van Leuteren who first managed to identify the star field 
on the images in a message on our DMS list. It is near the Cetus/Pisces border, 
near Iota cetus).
