The radio observations of Mira Belgium
(http://mira.telenet.be/meteoren/meteoren.jpg) of the VVS beacon at 49.990
MHz confirm this. I suppose that Felix Verbelen will make the spectrograms
and .wav files available on a web site later today or tomorrow!

I have no idea why . . . but messages that I have sent concerning
the Aurigids this morning (chiefly radio reports) have not been
posting. So, I am trying again . . .

All of my posts from this morning are in this one E-mail. Hopefully
this one will get through!

I just got my long lawn chair out of the garage and
will be out by 4 a.m. to see what there is to be seen under the light of

Moon. Not likely I'll see much . . . but you never know!

Just came back inside (5:30 a.m.) after watching in the bright moonlight
for
an hour. Highlight was a spectacular meteor that was a non-Aurigid. It
appeared at 5:17 a.m. and traveled toward the Aurigid radiant. It moved
rather
slowly and traveled about 25-30-degrees. Cream-white in color, it
mimicked
the ball from a Roman Candle and actually fragmented several times along
its
path. I estimated it at at least magnitude -5.

Right now, I'm monitoring
_http://www.spaceweather.com/glossary/nasameteorradar.html_
(http://www.spaceweather.com/glossary/nasameteorradar.html) -- the
MSFC meteor radar which is tuned to 67.25 MHz. Quite a few long
"whistles."
It will be interesting to see what happens around the time of the peak in
a
couple of hours.

There was apparently a significant "burst" of radio activity that seemed to

last about four minutes . . . between 11:30 and 11:34 UT (7:30 to 7:34 a.m.

EDT). During that interval I was able to hear many long overlapping
whistles
with quite a few "pings" as well. The "noise" diminished considerably
after
11:34 UT. Monitoring now at 11:56 UT and things seemed to have almost
returned to normal.

I suspect then that if indeed the Aurigid outburst occurred, that . . . at
least from a radio standpoint . . . it was quite intense, but also very
brief.
I would place the time of the peak at 11:32 UT, or five minutes earlier
than the time that was predicted.

Just received this E-Mail from long-time meteor scatter observer
Shelby Ennis in Kentucky (_w8wn at arrl.net_ (mailto:w8wn at arrl.net) ),
confirming that the Aurigids did indeed reach
a radio peak this morning at around 11:35 UT. -- joe r.

About 1100 UTC burns picked up here. Long, strong, soon many burns.
Others noticing the same thing.
Good shower! Good peak! VERY good. Reminded me of the Perseids
peaks of a few years ago, etc.
Thus, not a typical "Perseids peak" morning.

1100 UTC, pings increasing, good.
1120, 144.200 a solid mass of stations.
1132, pings fewer but still quite a few.
1135, Noticed that several stations switched from FFK441 to SSB on
144.200 because of the huge amount of activity and bursts.
1145, burns few now.
1150, band seems to be back to about normal.

More from Shelby Ennis in Kentucky . . .

Joe -
You should have my observations by now.
What I heard reminded me of the Perseids & Leonids peaks of years past.
I was listening to various and constantly different stations and thus
could not even begin to do a count (this normally comes from OH5IY and
some others who do constant monitoring), but I'd call this an outburst
and probably a storm. No way to know how big, but wouldn't be
surprised if it hit a ZHR close to 1000 for a while. Maybe bigger at
the peak - don't know, impossible to go beyond the fact that it was
much bigger than a typical "big 3" peak.
Please pass the info along to the various meteor groups, etc.
