I believe my first attempt at sending this got mangled somewhere along the line, so here's another try:

Recently there was a discussion of using a hyphen or a zero to designate no
shower members observed during a specific period. For new observers on the list,
I also suggest keeping in mind how you indicate a shower was not watched. This
situation occurs when an observer breaks their observation into more than one
period, and a shower is not monitored during one or more of those sessions.
This was the case with some recent reports I archived where the radiant had not
risen high enough. When a shower is not monitored for some reason, it is
normally noted by using either a slash “/” or an “X”.

To be on the safe side, you might consider including a brief explanation of the
notations you use in the heading section of your report. That way, there’s no
chance for any confusion no matter who is looking at the report.
