Dear all,
I am Mikiya Sato.
This year, calculated trails of Phoenicids will approach the earth
between Nov. 7 to Nov. 9.
The trails were formed from dust ejected in 1866 and in 1861.
There is little possibility of meteor appearance,
but please pay attention to these slow meteors (about 11 km/s).
Predicted data are as follows;
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1866 trail Time (UT) Sol.Lon. d-R (AU) Ej.V(m/s) fM
Ascending Node : Nov.7 23:49 225.826 +0.00072 -12.11 0.0034
Closest Point : Nov.8 4:10 226.008 0.00012
R.A. Dec. Vg(km/s)
Ascending Node : 7.04 -5.51 11.46
Closest Point : 6.99 -5.55 11.45
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1861 trail Time (UT) Sol.Lon. d-R (AU) Ej.V(m/s) fM
Ascending Node : Nov.9 23:34 227.824 -0.0036 -14.61 0.0025
Closest Point : Nov.9 0:43 226.008 0.00076
R.A. Dec. Vg(km/s)
Ascending Node : 6.77 -6.32 11.26
Closest Point : 7.07 -6.13 11.33
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The radiant is in the northern sky, near iota Cet,
because of large perturbation.
So, it can be observed even in the northern hemisphere.
A condition of 1866 trail is better than one of 1861.
But I think that the number of meteors that can be observed
might be very little, because the value of fM is very low
and the absolute value of ejection velocity is very high.
Best wishes,
Mikiya Sato (NAOJ)
