Correction to Monocerotids/November Orionids (MON/NOO)

I made an error in connecting recent IMO video data with other showers.

I associated the wrong video shower with the IMO Monocerotids (MON). The
correct shower data is in very good agreement with the IMO Working List
positions.

The other shower appears to be IAU shower #250, the November Orionids
(NOO), not to be confused with the main Orionid (ORI) shower.

This addendum to the November issue of NAMN Notes has the corrected data
for each of the showers. I apologize for including the incorrect data in
the November NAMN Notes. Fortunately, since both of these begin after
the Full Moon whiteout, there is time to get the correct information out
to our audience.

[I’d like to express my appreciation to Bob Lunsford for catching my
mistake. Bob and I have worked very closely over the last few years to
ensure that we both provide correct information to all experienced
observers. It’s always good to have another set of eyes watching our
analysis. Due to the rapid pace of new video shower data, it is easy to
have a typo or temporal shortsightedness, as well as differing opinions
about connections between the video data and historical showers,
creating some subjects for discussion.]

Please use the data below for the NOO and MON showers:


NOO - November Orionids-IMO video shower #118, IAU Shower #250.

I will use IMO video positions for the shower since it is the most
current; the difference between the two radiants is about 5 degrees at
most and tracks very closely. The IMO data suggests a velocity of 45
km/sec, the IAU 43 km/sec, medium to medium fast.

Nov 28   091 (6:03), +16 (Video indicated peak, IAU peak is Nov 27)

I will cover December positions next month; the historical IAU shower
ends Nov 29, while IMO video suggests an end of activity on December 9th.

MON - Monocerotids

IMO Working List shower MON and video shower #131 never are more than 3
degrees apart, so are undoubtedly the same. I will use the IMO Working
list position, except for the latest dates (in December) when video data
suggests the shower continues a few days longer. Since the video data
does not indicate any activity this month, I will only list the IMO
visual positions. The shower velocities are 42 and 41 km/s respectively,
medium speed. This will be covered in more detail in the December NAMN
Notes. Remember, all dates are UT dates so refer to the early morning hours.
