This is absolutely true. In a meteorite fall the fireball last a few seconds. In 
a re-entry it lasts up to several minutes.

Also, study of actual meteorites shows that only a thin outer layer of a few 
mm's has altered mineralogy due to heating. This shows the inside effectively 
does not heat up. So for that information, this experiment really was redundant.

The avereage incoming meteorites also originally is much larger than a few 
centimeters really.
