While Photoshop isn't a cheap program, it is so incredibly useful that 
anybody preparing graphics should seriously consider getting it. The process 
involved in stacking images in order to construct a composite is quite 
simple, and has the advantage that individual frames can be enabled or 
disabled, as well at making it possible to easily remove interference like 
the Moon.

Having your acquisition program generate composites is certainly useful 
(Metrec does this, for instance), but it isn't a complete substitute for 
more comprehensive compositing tools.
