In fact, the term of 'meteor' implies atmosphere. I think that the  
most precise definition of meteor would be that it is a whole set of  
phenomena which occur when the meteoroid penetrates into the atmosphere.
Meteoroids are interplanetary dust particles which mostly  originate  
due to the erosion of comets.
Meteorite is a body which survive the penetration and travel through  
the planetary atmosphere (if the atmosphere exists) and hits the ground.
