David,

I observe from a country club gold course that is regualrly patrolled by black bears although I've never seen one at night. I also have spent the night observing from the top of nearby 5630' Graybeard Mountain (and close to Billy Graham's house) where there are bears galore, rattlesnakes and a few, they say, mountain lions (Eastern cougars, thought for a century to be extinct.) I've never been bothered by anything. I once obserbved the Perseid maximum with a meber of the AstroGators Astronomy Club in Florida. Suddenly a plane toff from the nearby scrublands flying low and with no lights on! I think that was a far more dangerous situtaion.

> The heartbreaking death of young Canadian folksinger Taylor Mitchell from an extremely rare coyote attack this week makes me wonder what the risks are watching meteors, alone, at night, on a lawn chair (prone and two feet off the ground), in a remote area. Are mountain lions, bears, wild dogs, coyotes, etc. more likely to attack you in certain areas of the country under those circumstances? Have any of you had (or heard of) incidents, and do you take precautions? Recommendations?
