I agree. At best you're only a third of the way, and certainly not on
top of the events. Even with a platform in the meteor layer, most
meteors would be tens of kilometres away and the bright ones typically
further than that. If you could place an altitude-adjustable platform
there, of more interest I think would be the velocities of the winds
that give rise to the shearing of meteor trains.
Telescopic observation (surely you remember that?) effectively gets you
closer than these platforms, but admittedly with a smaller field of view
targeting fainter meteors.
