The Spaceweather.com story says that Eta Aquarii is 156 light years away and
44 times more luminous than the Sun. Not the Eta Aquarids. Obviously the
writer of the Yahoo blog is a bit confused (as several comments point out).

It's on the internet! it must be true!

Light show
Halley's Comet may only be viewable from earth every 75 years or so, but
we do get to see its lit-up dust more often that that. The Eta Aquarids
showered us with quite a show this week. Earth passes through the dust
stream twice a year - so it was a rare chance to get a look at the sky
lights. A story on Spaceweather.com noted that while the meteors are 156
light years away, they are 44 times as bright as the sun - meaning anyone
who braved the cold and lack of sleep enjoyed a nice sight. Searches on
the Web for "eta aquarid meteor shower" have sky-rocketed 150% in the last
week. Lookups on "meteor showers" and "meteor shower calendar" also scored
high.
