Depending on the peak brightness it could have been a meteor or fireball. Eight seconds is a long duration for such a object but within the possible limits. Another more remote possibility is the re-entry of a satellite or rocket booster. Man-made objects tend to last much longer than eight seconds due to their much lower velocity upon entering the atmosphere.
