This may be a bit off topic, but it is related to the trail created by
an object moving through a fluid - either air or liquid. During the end
of the Second World War, the Navy conducted experiments with objects
moving through water at various speeds. The objects were also subjected
to rotation. Different rotation speeds created a change in the shape of
the trail Fast moving objects had very tight trails whilst slow moving
objects had trails that were more open. Of course, this was under
controlled conditions. The were photographed on film. Computer programs
were not manipulating digital images. I tried to locate examples of the
WWII navy photos, but was able to find the following on youtube, a
steel bearing dropped into water at slow motion. Interesting to watch
interms of trail formation.
