Late on the evening of January 3rd the clouds began to move off the coast of South Carolina so that by midnight I was lucky to have clear skies for the peak of the Quadrantids. I was in my sleeping bag ready to observe a little before 1:00 am. The temperature was slightly below freezing, with no wind. I needed to be at work at 5 am, so reluctantly, had to leave my site under clear skies (by the time I was at work though, the clouds had moved back in over the coast).
I have never been able to observe the peak of this shower, and 2011 would continue that tradition. Activity was consistent, with some beautiful white Quads crossing the sky, but rates were low. In all, I recorded only 15 QUA in 2.04 hours of observing. Below is my full report.
Yesterday I had to catch up on sleep after work, but today I will begin going through the reports I have received, and publishing the summaries on the NAMN website.
Clear skies!
