I believe that the transparency of your sky has a lot to do with what you experience. Daniel's experience was probably in high humidity where the moonlight is scattered much more than in dry areas. Those viewing in drier conditions can enjoy darker skies and therefore more activity. 

Tony was spot on when he said you can still see more activity under a full moon for the Perseids than on most moonless nights throughout the year. So I would definitely give it a go and watch the Perseids this year. Be certain to use the tips provided by observers on this list to help you make the most of your experience under these conditions!
