Disclaimer: I have no clue what happened there. But ...

... this all reminds of the "Loch von Andechs" that many German amateur
astronomers will fondly recall: In March 1995 a little blast by a
landscaping guy with botched paperwork was widely misread as a fresh
impact crater (and it looked way more impressive than the current one).
