Well, here's the cloud cover map

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/satpics/latest_uk_ir.html

just click on 2000 to see 8pm GMT cloud cover

then go here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon

for Devon's location, for those of an UKfree geographic knowledge

and Hampshire's a bit over from that

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampshire

South Leicestershire, well, that's interesting. Hmmm, interesting. Ain't been that clear here allday, so a bit of a surprise it was clear in South Leicestershire. There's this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Kilworth

then you click on the map and look at this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Leicestershire_UK_location_map.svg

which gives you a bit of a zoom in on the entire county in its top left which allows you to look at this

the East Midlands rainfall radar map, and you can click on 2000 UT (8pm GMT) again, at top of map. Click on the places map too (the City of Leicester, the "county town" is more or less in the middle of the county, see above map again).

You can estimate the seeing then, you know, the cloud, the rain, things like that. Take it back to 1900 too with the animation buttons.

Oh, I dunno, maybe I'm just being too cynical about how these things are reported, and it ain't fair to dismiss anecdotal evidence out of hand, but it's not uncommon for such to be contradictory. It's been at least seriously Cirrusy on and off all day and it's been ten tenths cover for the past couple of hours. Maybe there was a midlands to south coast gap then, or maybe it was just misty and murky.

It's interesting when you get to look at something that was nextdoor geographically and be more able to contextualise what you are being told in terms of what you aren't being told. And then extend that to the full class of such reportage, as a kind of calibrating exercise.

Cheers

John

And from all that you can estimate the weather
