The first rule of lists, moderators or owners, going back to times immemorial, is that, rightly or wrongly, they can do whatever they want.

People who do not like them doing whatever they want are free to set up their own lists and go elsewhere.  Many of us will have read this many times on many lists and many fora.

I'm not commenting here on who is right, who is wrong, who is being professional or not, or who is being rude or not.

I'm commenting upon this idea that you have which seems to have forgotten the only real rule of lists and mailling groups and fora.

Your personal opinion, and my personal opinion, on that is irrelevant.  What is more, your own personal opinion above is couched in personal terms directly aimed at the person of the moderator, which is standard practice in circumstances like these when the vociferous feel their only tool of winning, vociferousness, is likely to be taken away.  It also carries with it the old underhand tactic of subtly impugning the list owner for being inadequate enough to mandate unsuitable moderators.  Lew Gramer has been running meteorobs possibly longer than a not unfew of the members have been alive.  I'd think he'd be allowed to pick as moderator whomever he bloody well pleases to.
