Lava field?  You must be thinking of the Big Island -- Haleakala is
not currently active. (Last eruption was in the 18th century.)  Now...
that ~would~ make a nice composition to have a Kilauea lava field
(or even fountain) in the foreground of an astrophoto!  --Rob

My first thought is to get a graduated ND filter, a fast wide lens and a
glowing lava field to put in the lower foreground.
