If you don't want to drive quite as far, and gain the advantage of high
altitude, you might consider Table Mountain Campground near Wrightwood,
CA.
Takes a little over an hour to get there from the L.A. basin, and
altitude is
over 7,000 feet so LA sky glow is much reduced. You still have the
lights of
Palmdale and Lancaster to your northeast, but they are far below you.
This
is a very popular campground for amateur astronomers. --R
